Setup

Talk to the old lady who rents out her room, see Lindy's friend

Scene

The old lady is home, nearly certain, yes
The room is for rent, nearly certain, no -- it's occupied

Yolo and Lindy wander down to the wrong side of town, near the water and the docks. There's a small row of houses and apartments here, most installed above warehouses. It's cheap, dilapidated housing, but purely functional. Most of it is used as space for the dockside prostitutes and street walkers, but some houses the poorer folks that work the docks in a less seafaring capacity: shipwrights, dockyard laborers, barkeeps, and the like.

Yolo

furtively walks up to the door, takes out the journal, and confirms the location

This is it...
she knocks on the door

Game

  • GME
    • There's silence for a moment, the sound of opening shutters, and then a cane on the stairs. An older woman opens the door and looks the two women up and down.
    • Does she notice Yolo's wounds, or the pair's furtive nature?
      • Very Likely, extreme yes.
    • Does she assume it's a domestic abuse situation?
      • Likely, No.
      • What instead? Find riches

Kathy

sucks on her teeth, and looks out from behind the chain on the door
And what are the two of you wanting now? There's naught here but an old lady.

Yolo

We were looking for somewhere to stay.

Kathy

Well, the inns are back over that way, on the other side of town. Now,
she starts to shut the door

Yolo

Please! We need somewhere discrete.

Kathy

Looks Lindy and Yolo up and down
And why on earth would you think to ask me for it?

Lindy

Because Daxter said if I was ever in trouble and needed somewhere to not be seen for a while, this was the place to come.

Kathy

Eyes the two suspiciously
Did he now? And just where is Mr. Dorsby these days?

Yolo

turning to Lindy
he wouldn't have used a pseudonym, would he?

Lindy

Just to make sure, we are talking about the same person. Dax, Daxter Bigby? Mustache almost as large as his personality, both a little bristly on the outside, but only the outside?

Game

  • GME
    • Does Kathy think they both know Daxter?
    • Nearly Certain, yes

Kathy

purses her lips, and closes the door. There's a rattling of chains on the other side, then the door opens fully

That'd be him, and only his friends would describe him that way. Come in before whatever trouble you're running from finds you here. Come on, up the stairs.
she taps Yolo and Lindy on the rump with the cane

I'll put a pot of tea on and then the two of you will tell me what darkness that old fool has brought to my door this time.

Game

  • GME
    • is Kathy's other renter here? Yes
    • Heal, Inherit -- Her granddaughter is staying with her at the moment. Helping her with the household upkeep and helping Kathy deal with her aging body.
    • Kathy comes up the stairs behind the pair rather spryly. Her granddaughter Ada is sitting next to the window, mending some clothing. Kathy goes immediately to the kitchen and busies herself with the kettle.

Kathy

Sit down, sit down. Ada honey, can you be a dear and get some plates and saucers down for tea?

Yolo

Good to meet you Ada. I'm Yolo, and this is my friend Lindy.

Kathy

Lindy... lindy... that wouldn't be short for Lindiwie would it?

Lindy

nods
Yes, how'd you know?

Kathy

Daxter mentioned you more than once in passing.

looking at Yolo
And you dear? How do you know that scoundrel?

Yolo

He...
she chokes a bit
He gave me a hand up when I was down on my luck. Took me along on an adventure and showed me the ropes of recovering artifacts from old ruins.

Kathy

Did he now? You must be a rare one indeed for the great Daxter Biggby to come down off his high horse and deign to take an apprentice.

she laughs and shakes her head sadly as she makes up the tea tray
Ada, be a dear and fetch my bottle would you? I've a feeling Yolo has some news that'll warrant it.

Kathy comes to the table and waits on Ada to deliver the tea tray and a bottle of rum. When Ada brings the lot, she pours a splash of whiskey in each glass
He's gone, isn't he?

Yolo

closes her eyes and turns her head
Yes... how did you...

Kathy

If you worked with Dax, you can't be that daft child.

She smiles and points a weather finger at the corner of Yolo's mouth and her eyes.
Mourning is written on both your faces, and you wouldn't come asking me for a favor without him if he could be brought.

she hands out the cups of liquor
How did it happen?

Yolo

there is a distant look in her eyes. She grips the cup with both hands.
He missed a step and triggered a trap. Spike nicked an artery.

she smiles sadly and looks up from the liquor at Kathy
He asked me to lie and say it was something grander. I'll have to come up with something eventually, but nothing seems fitting.

Kathy

laughs bitterly
Ha. That's Dax to a tee. Dropping a stitch and going out blandly.

she wipes a tear from her eye
Tell people he pushed you out of the way and took the trap himself. He'd have liked that, saving the damsel.

Ada:
Gramm, how'd you know Daxter?

Kathy

He was
she blushes

It was an autumn / summer romance.
she smiles and shakes her head

It was a lifetime ago. Join me in a toast.
she raises her cup
To Daxxy, a walking contradiction. There was never a more gentlemanly letch, humble braggart, or gentle warrior. Wherever you are, I hope there's adventure.

They all drink, and then sits silently for a moment. Kathy begins pouring the tea.

Kathy

So what trouble did the old fool drag the two of you into?

Game

Yolo and Lindy begin laying out the current state of affairs for Kathy in detail. As the pot of tea dwindles, Kathy sends Ada to put on more water. As the second pot of tea runs to an end, so does the story of Yolo's adventure to date.

Kathy

That's... quite the tale.
she rubs the bridge of her nose

Look, I want to help you, truly I do. But ancient cults and Lee's thugs? I won't put Ada in that kind of danger.

Yolo

Do you know anywhere else we can go? Someone else that can shelter us? Please, we're really in a bind.

Game

  • GME
    • It's a speech / convincing check. Intellect will work. 5 difficulty
  • Yolo
    • I'll use 2 levels of effort, rolled 9, weak hit

Kathy

sighs deeply
Ada, how would you like to go visit your aunt for a while?

Ada:
I mean... I haven't seen Aunty Celia in years now, but it's such a long trip, and if it's not safe for me here, then surely it's...

Kathy

Not really a concern. I'm old dear. Even if they can bring themselves to hurt an old lady, the worst they can do is steal a few years. You've got more to lose.

looking at Yolo and Lindy
So that's the best I can do for you. Cover my granddaughter's traveling expenses, and you can stay.

Game

  • GME
    • 750 gold

Yolo

We can do that, and here's something more for the inconvenient form.
hands over 800 gold in metals

Kathy

Go ahead and pack dear. You needn't be on the next boat out, but don't terry. I'd say goodbye to Mark before you leave as well. You two, the room will be ready tonight. Try to stay out of trouble until Ada gets underway though, yes?

Yolo

Agreed.
Looking at Lindy
We have some other errands to run, and will be back later.
