Scene

Narrator

The three carriages shot off into the night, careening down the cobblestones of [[Places/The Old City]]. After a short jaunt, they reached the edge of the city, the gates, and split at the first crossroads, each going in separate directions.

Driver

Did you see that? They followed us out of the gates. Good gods, how were they on our trail so quick? We'd just hauled in the recorder.

Shotgun

They fetched [[Commissioner Ayla]] from her house, so either it's being watched, or someone knew their men didn't come back from [[Irvin Albrecht]]'s house. That or maybe there's a snoop at the office of the recorder? Lots of folks pay attention to what goes on, lots of folks might want to tail us.

Driver

Figure they'll stop since it's the decoy car?

Shotgun

Might. They might divert to a trap and try to grab them to sweat a bit. No use worrying about it.

Driver

Not so, not so. If they catch em, we shouldn't expect trouble at the house soon. If they report we forked, they might track us quicker.

Shotgun

Fair enough. You think there will be trouble?

Driver

There's always trouble. An unruly guest, unwanted visitors, a hostile reception when we take 'em back. There's always trouble. We just don't know what sort or when yet.

Shotgun

That's usually true. I think we can check "bumpy ride" off the trouble list though. We'll have to see what sort we eventually find.

Yolo

relates the above conversation as it's happening to Lindy

Lindy

Gods that's bleak. I thought going to Irvin would give us an advantage...

Yolo

It has, just perhaps not the upper hand.
Hey, I see something...

Game

Lindy

They took us down the coast to one of the old lighthouses. That's a solid choice. Close to town but not visited. Hard to see into, good lines of sight, easily defensible.

Narrator

The wagon comes to a hault. The man riding shotgun scrambles down the side of the wagon. There's a brief conversation between him and another man who comes running up from the guard house. As soon as the two of them have exchanged greetings, he throws open the door to the cab. He helps Yolo and Lindy out, and then as soon as that, the wagon and driver are away again. The remaining guards fall in around Yolo and Lindy, one ahead and one behind. They are led into the lighthouse.

Lighthouse Keeper

Welcome to the lighthouse. Youll be staying with us for a few days. There's beds down here, that's for us,
he points to himself and the other guard

There's additional bedding up near the top of the tower. Try to stay away from windows, even though it's unlikely you'd be seen at this distance. In the event that we're attacked, we have two options: stay and fight, using the high ground of the tower as a natural advantage. Alternatively, there are smuggler's caves near here we can disappear into. We know the paths through them and can lead you, otherwise you're liable to get lost and killed.

I know the situation isn't ideal, but listen to our directions and we'll all get through fine. Any questions?

Yolo

May we retire for the night? I'm beat.

Shotgunner

Absolutely, just follow me up the stairs to the top.

Narrative

The three go up the stairs to the top of the light hous. Near the top, there's a ladder that runs up towards the base of the lighthouse. It runs up into the floor, through, and then opens out into the floor where the light for the lighthouse is. It's a modern lighthouse, with a large electrical light shining down on to a spinning mirror, but it's been retrofitted. There's still the same giant burn pit below.

The guard shuts the trap door behind them, then walks across the floor to the firepit. He opens another trap door, and motions for the two to go inside.

Shotgunner

he hops down behind them
Here's where you'll be staying. It's a little cramped, but people won't look for you here. You've got a couple of hammocks for sleeping, some dry goods for eating, and several jugs of water.

he points
The pots there are for answering nature's call. There's a door to the outside here
he opens it
to dump them when you're done. If, for some reason, you have to run, there are ropes, and you can attach them to the eyelets here.

Lindy

How will we know if we need to climb down?

Shotgunner

If one of us opens the door, we'll knock like this
he produces two short raps, pauses, then three more knocks
You hear anything else at that door, don't open it. If someone tries to force their way through, climb down and run. There's a small boat moored not far from here, if you run straight towards the shore. You can use that to try and get out, or you can take your chances sneaking through the brush.

Yolo

And where will we all meet up?

Shotgunner

We won't. If you have to run, assume we're dead.

Yolo

I see... thanks.

Shotgunner

It probably won't come to that. Bar the door when I leave. We'll bring you some hot food in the morning.
he climbs out the hatch
